The reason we snore

Why Do We Snore?

Why Do We Snore At Carina, Brisbane, Carina Gardens Dental

Snoring is caused when the soft palate of the mouth collapses while you sleep, obstructing air flow to your lungs. The sound is a result of air flow into the mouth that moves past the sagging tissues of the throat and palate, causing the vibration we hear as snoring.

Of course, the common cold and allergies can cause anyone to snore. Treating the cold by drinking plenty of warm tea, water, and over-the-counter cold medicines may help you breathe easier at through the night. A hot shower may also temporarily open your nasal passages so you can sleep better. But chronic snoring is another issue.

Snoring issues

Chronic or Problem Snoring

Chronic snoring can become a problem because obstructed airflow means you are not getting enough air while you sleep. It can cause headaches, throat pain, and daytime drowsiness. Untreated snoring greatly increases your risk of heart attack and other health problems. Sleeping on your side may help, but anti-snoring appliances are very effective at keeping your breathing passages open, no matter what position you sleep in.

As we age, snoring may become more pronounced and more frequent as a result of the throat tissue becoming softer, and muscle tone being lost in the throat and nasal passages. Snoring can also be a result of blocked nasal airways, being overweight, or alcohol. If you have a problem with snoring, abstaining from alcohol and losing weight can be great ways to mitigate snoring and improve your overall health. But chronic snoring may be a sign of more serious conditions, such as sleep apnea.

sleeping disorder

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a potentially serious health issue and is considered a sleeping disorder. Unfortunately, this is a common condition that can cause your breathing to stop and start throughout the night, preventing you from getting enough oxygen. There are two types of sleep apnea:

Obstructive sleep apnea

Is the most common type of sleep apnea and is the result of an upper airway blockage or narrowing of the airway. The narrowing may be caused by excess weight, enlarged tonsils, or hormonal changes among other things.

Central sleep apnea

Takes place as the brain fails to send out the signals needed to breathe. Some risk factors include congestive heart failure, hypothyroidism, or sleeping at a high altitude.

Anti-Snoring devices are the most common way to treat sleep apnea. However, a sleep study may be needed to properly diagnose sleep apnea and its cause.

How Anti-Snoring Devices Work

Anti-Snoring devices are custom made to fit the individual patient. Much like a retainer or clear aligner, a mandibular advancement device (MAD) is an anti-snoring device that fits into the mouth over your teeth. The special design moves the lower jaw slightly forward to increase the airway space in the back of the throat. The device is worn at night while you sleep, so it may take you some time to feel comfortable with it.

Some patients may snore because the tongue falls into the back of the throat while sleeping. In this case, a tongue-retaining device (TRD) may be used to keep the tongue in place and prevent it from blocking your airways. While this solution is less common, it may be needed by some patients.

While the anti-snoring device may take getting used to, many patients prefer it over a CPAP device, or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine, which can be cumbersome. And while the CPAP is helpful for many, some patients experience dry throat and irritation due to the continuous airflow. If this sounds like you, talk to our dentists to see if you are a candidate for switching your anti-snoring device.
